Morocco Fans Crash Pitch in Protest After Late Argentina Goal

Crowd Trouble Mars Opening Olympics Football Match

Play Halted for Nearly Two Hours

SAINT-ETIENNE, France (AP) - Morocco fans crashed the pitch to protest a late goal by Argentina at the opening match of the 2024 Olympics football tournament on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the dying seconds of the match, with Argentina trailing 2-1. A cross from the left found its way to Cristian Medina, who fired home from close range. However, the referee ruled out the goal for offside, sparking furious protests from the Moroccan players and fans.

Fans surged onto the pitch and surrounded the referee, who was forced to abandon the match. The players were escorted off the field by security, and the game was eventually abandoned after a delay of nearly two hours.

The result means that Morocco have picked up a valuable point in their opening match, while Argentina will be disappointed to have missed out on a chance to start their campaign with a win.
