Real Sociedad produced a stunning performance to thrash defending champions Real Madrid 4-0 at the Reale Arena on Sunday. The Basque side took the lead through Brais Mendez in the 17th minute and doubled their advantage through David Silva just before half-time. Alexander Sorloth and Robert Navarro added further goals in the second half to complete the rout. The result leaves Real Madrid five points behind leaders Barcelona in the La Liga standings, having played one game more. It is the first time Real Madrid have lost by four goals in La Liga since 2013. Real Sociedad started the game brightly and were rewarded for their positive approach when Mendez fired them into an early lead. The winger picked up the ball on the left-hand side of the pitch and drove into the Real Madrid penalty area before firing a low shot past Thibaut Courtois. Real Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, with Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior well-marshalled by the Sociedad defence. The visitors' best chance fell to Rodrygo, but the Brazilian's effort was well saved by Alex Remiro. Sociedad doubled their lead just before half-time when Silva finished off a fine move involving Mendez and Sorloth. The former Manchester City midfielder received the ball on the edge of the area and took a touch before firing a low shot into the bottom corner. Real Madrid made a change at half-time, bringing on Luka Modric for Eduardo Camavinga, but it failed to have the desired effect.
